Achieve between 4,500-7,000 steps in a 4 hour shift volunteering at Ascension Mercy Hospital in our Transport area. This assignment provides patient wheelchair escort at discharge, delivers supplies and equipment to and from nursing units and ancillary departments and assists with special projects. If you are caring, energetic, and able to push patients in wheelchairs this is the area for you. Friendly volunteers are needed during the weekdays 8:00 a.m.-noon, noon - 4:00 p.m.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide wheelchair transport to patients at discharge to car at hospital entrance Escort or provide wheelchair transport to patients and visitors within the hospital as requested. Pick up and deliver food trays from the Serving Kitchen to patient care units. Deliver supplies and equipment to and from patient care units, ancillary departments, and support service and deliver specimens to the lab. Pick-up and deliver other items from various departments as requested. Transfer patient clothing/items from the outpatient procedures area to designated patient care unit as requested. Collate paperwork and provide other short term projects as requested. Record volunteer activity into daily transport log.

The Mercy Hospital Gift shop is a cheery place to spend time as a volunteer and a great place to shop.  You will operate the cash register, credit card machine and assist customers with shopping for baby items, jewelry and accessories, candy and many other unique items.  Evening, weekend and daytime shifts are available.

Volunteers provide support to pharmacy staff while gaining knowledge and experience in a pharmacy. Duties include receiving drug orders, identifying orders, prioritizing and relaying orders to pharmacist for processing, assisting with clerical functions, and other duties under supervision.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

Receive drug orders from nursing units, identify drug orders, prioritize orders, and give to Pharmacists to be processed. Put away items received from vendors. Check drug inventory for outdated items. Clean bins, shelves, unit dose drawers as needed. Deliver items to nursing units or the Cancer Center in person or via pneumatic tube or dumbwaiter. Clerical functions to assist the Pharmacy Manager or Inventory Technician by organizing files, arranging information in 3-ring binders, as well as various typing and relabeling duties. Assist the Pharmacists or Technicians with projects that require limited knowledge about medication and are easily understood by the volunteer and supervised by a Pharmacy staff member.

Emergency Room- Volunteers assist Emergency department staff, patients and visitors with a variety of duties to enhance the customer service in Emergency Services.

Patient Care Unit 2- Volunteers provide light clerical duties, department specific tasks, and provide general assistance to department staff, visitors, and patients with non-medical aspects of care. Volunteers do not perform patient care tasks that require the training or education of a Certified Nursing Assistant or licensed health care employee.  Volunteer duties include set-up of surgical rooms for patients arriving the next morning and assist nursing staff with non-medical aspects of patient care.  

Rehab Unit - Socialize, read to patients or other individual activities as directed.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform errands on and off of the patient care area. Assist nursing staff with non-medical aspects of patient care. Assist in keeping public areas, equipment rooms and hallways neat and tidy. Assist in keeping supplies stocked. Transport or escort Patients as deemed appropriate by nursing personnel following hospital procedure.

Volunteers who enjoy making craft items are wanted to assist with making paper flowers and other types of creations to be sold in the Gift Shop or given to patients. Creative volunteers are also needed to make tray favors to be given to Mercy patients. Depending on the item, volunteers can either work at the hospital or make things at home. Contact volunteer services for more information.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Projects: Participate in making crafts or sewing projects on Wednesday mornings in the Volunteer Multi-purpose room or in your own home. Ice Pack Covers: Use pattern to sew covers for ice packs for rehab patients. Happy Flowers: Participate in making tissue paper flowers for sale in the Gift Shop on most Thursday afternoons. Beanies/Caps: Knit beanies, according to directions provided and as able, for Birthplace patients. Make caps as able for Cancer Center patients. Tray Favors: Participate in making favors for patient trays to celebrate the seasons/holidays. Tray Favors volunteers meet about four (4) times per year in the Volunteer Multi-Purpose Room. Lap Robes: Sew, knit or crochet lap robes/quilts for patients. Should be about 45x60 inches, to fit a male or female adult, and be large enough to pull up over one’s arms. Layettes: Make clothing to be donated to the Birthplace Unit for newborns. Pretty Pockets: Sew fun, discreet drain bulb covers for surgical patients. Mastectomy Pillows:  Use pattern to sew and stuff comfort pillows for breast surgery recovery.

Volunteer will assist gift shop coordinator in various fundraising projects. Projects include: Book, Geranium, jewelry, travel and craft sales. Duties can include reserving sale dates, creating and distributing fliers, scheduling specific help for fundraiser as needed, and assisting with any needs the day of fundraiser.

 Duties/Responsibilites:

Assist with fundraiser events throughout the year. Call local businesses to solicit donations. Assist with the selling of products for fundraiser events.

Clerical Volunteers provide assistance to staff that may include filing records, assisting with mailings, stocking office supplies, computer data entry, photocopying, and other duties as requested. The various areas of Ascension Mercy currently utilizing clerical volunteers include: Volunteer Services, Foundation, Cardiology, Breast Center, Outpatient Procedures Area, Administration.

Assist with general office duties. May be responsible for computer data entry. Answer phones and take messages. Provide help with mailings Help with any short-term projects Assist with any special events.

Spiritual Services is in need of volunteers to distribute the Sacrament of the Eucharist to patients, as assigned by the spiritual services staff.  Ministers can serve any day of the week. Volunteers are required to be a Roman Catholic Eucharistic Minister approved by the Bishop or Bishop representative.
