Who We Are
What is VITA?
VITA = Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
The mission of the program, which is coordinated by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), is to provide free basic tax return preparation for low-to-moderate income and elderly taxpayers. The program at UW Oshkosh is run by student and other community volunteers.
What We Do
The VITA program has operated for over 50 years, offering free tax help to qualified individuals:
- People who generally make $69,000 or less
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers
who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.
Qualified individuals may make an appointment to come to the UW Oshkosh campus (Sage Hall) where volunteers, like you, will prepare their Federal and Wisconsin tax return(s).
While the IRS coordinates the overall VITA program, our VITA site is managed by UW Oshkosh in partnership with the IRS and staffed by IRS-certified volunteers who want to make a difference in their communities.
VITA services are not only free for taxpayers, they are also a reliable and trusted source for preparing individual tax returns. All VITA volunteers who prepare returns must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. This training includes maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of the tax laws, the IRS requires a quality review check for every return prepared at the VITA site prior to filing.
